#02 The Necessity of Sound Doctrine
By Paul B Thomas

Topic: The necessity of sound doctrine
Scripture Reading: (Ephesians 1:17)
Purpose: Sound doctrine

The old paths restore us to purity and holiness. The old paths return us to compassion and christlikeness. Some folks are always trying the new. However we need the ancient landmarks for they remind us of where we have come from and what we have progressed form. Recently in America we saw the removal of statutes and monuments, the problem has not been so much history but rather folks angry at their own internal life history, the core problem is a heart issue not a historical and geographical or cultural issue. Pulling down moments don’t give man peace, dealing with the issues of mens heart does.

1.Sound doctrine enables us to discover old paths and ancient landmarks.
“Do not remove the ancient landmark which your fathers have set” (Proverbs 22:28).
"Stand at the crossroads and look. Ask for the ancient paths: Where is the good way? Then walk in it and find rest for your souls. But they said, 'We will not walk in it!' (Jeremiah 6;16).

2.Sound doctrine helps us to discover the gold, old and new
A householder who brings forth out of his storehouse treasures both new and old (Matt 13;52).
Apostolic householders bring forth forth revelational and foundational truth. Old roots and new fruits. Old roots, the foundations of truth, new fruits the new wine and anointing that comes as a result of revealing and uncovering the old truths.

3. Sound doctrine give us stability and strength.
Doctrine is enough to build on so why change a foundation, when a doctrine that is established forever has historically proven to work in all generations. Why change that which worked for the apostles? if it worked in the day when Rome when fake gods were glorified and men idolised, it will most certainly work today on our society and time.

4.Sound doctrine effects our eternity and destiny.
Some things don’t change. “Do not remove the ancient landmark Which your fathers have set” (Pro. 22:28). Landmarks are pointers, lighhouses, roadmaps for all generations. Our eternal destiny depends upon being able to read old maps (scriptures) for direction and salvation, (Ephesians 1:13; see also 2 Thessalonians 2:13-14).

5.Sound doctrine determines what I fight over and what I ignore.
There are some fights not worth struggling over, there are some fights that are just there to get you mad, steal your zeal and make you hot under the collar. Those are fights I need to stay away from.

6.Sound doctrine makes us contenders not pretenders.
“I felt I had to write and urge you to contend for the faith that was once for all entrusted to the saints” (Jude 1:3; see also Philippians 1:27). If I’m gong to fight I make sure its a fight worth fighting over.

7.Sound doctrine helps a man establish a healthy pattern of good thinking and sound reasoning, Good preaching comes from sound reasoning and right preaching. . “As the pattern of sound teaching, with faith and love in Christ Jesus” (2 Timothy 1:13).

A man can be a good orator and have bad doctrine, but he cannot be a good preacher without having sound doctrine. He can make a lot of noise like a going and loud sounding cymbal, what the bible calls uncertain sounds. Bad preachers are noisy preachers, they are loud and empty, “empty vessels make the most noise” They have no content just aloud noise. All the volume is in the screach and not the teach. You don’t know what they are saying because the sound is “uncertain”

8.Sound doctrine provides legitimacy in age of controversy and heresy, Sound doctrine will produce legitimate children. Bad doctrine will produce illegitimate children. illegitimate children will sing with you in the the congregation yet disconnect with you when it comes to doctrine. (Deut 23:2; 1 Timothy 4:16.

9.Sound doctrine teaches us how to live godly, holy and morally.
Without such we have no boundary or integrity/

10.Sound doctrine gives us stability and unity as a family.
Sound doctrine will save your soul, make you whole, keep you neat and keep you on your feet (1 Timothy 4:16). I’ve seen preachers who have sat down, given up because of bad doctrine. Friends without doctrine you have yet to stand up let alone sit down. Sound doctrine will keep you on your feet, it will keep you up right and up tight. It will keep you in the fight and bring as in the light. Thats what sound doctrine will do.

NOTES: Yes families need doctrine too. He church family and the family that has a church.  Without doctrine we have kids that rule their mothers, disrespect their fathers, scorn their preachers and mock the teachers. Lawlessness in the home can never be godliness before God’s throne, in the church. Bible-less children never make lawyers, rulers, governors, leaders. Yes they may have a quick rise to fame but in the hour of scrutiny and testing they fall. What is sound doctrine.. its usually found in the narrow way, the road less followed the doctrine less believed, the truth first preached, the gospel first understood. If YOU can preach it like Peter and teach it like Paul you have sound doctrine.
