Dealing with Legalism .. Are you prepared to let it die?
Or are ye ignorant, brethren (for I speak to men who know the law), that the law hath dominion over a man for so long time as he liveth? 2 For the woman that hath a husband is bound by law to the husband while he liveth; but if the husband die, she is discharged from the law of the husband. 3 So then if, while the husband liveth, she be joined to another man, she shall be called an adulteress: but if the husband die, she is free from the law, so that she is no adulteress, though she be joined to another man. 4 Wherefore, my brethren, ye also were made dead to the law through the body of Christ; that ye should be joined to another, even to him who was raised from the dead, that we might bring forth fruit unto God. (Romans 7:1-4).
He uses the illustration of marriage to explain the process of the old covenant law. The carnal man is married to the law of sin and death. It is as it in in a marriage, annulled only at death, which is baptism for the believer. When a believer is baptised into the name of Jesus he is released from the law and the law of sin and death.
Christ himself revealed this to us through his death, he took on flesh and became of Adam’s race through Mary, but it was through his death that the agreement with the law and the bondage of the law that all things associated with the law is dealt with. Through our association with Christ in baptism and his death we like him are free from the law, we were at his death free to marry another and our baptism reveals that we made Christ our Groom and we became his bride. (Ro 6:1-3) “what shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin…know ye not that as many of us that were baptised into Jesus Christ were baptised into his death.”
This then also tells us the christ has married the church. So now let me reiterate my point by saying this, who are you married too Christ or the Law. the fruit of the law are the works of the flesh, children of the flesh but the fruits of our marital union with Christ is “love joy peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self control against such things there is no law” Gal 5:22-23).
I am sure you have been in churches where preacher is very insistent on issues, head covering, clothing, fasting, the keeping of days, hair issues, let me be frank here, the higher law of life in Christ Jesus, will reveal that our walking in love joy peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self control.. is far greater than the keeping of any other man made standards. I personally would rather have a church that demonstrated the fruits of the Holy Ghost than a church where folks had to comply with standards. The higher law the “Law of life in Christ Jesus” works (Ro 8:2) it’s a true sign of Christ in us and that our baptism truly divorced us from the law and married us to Christ. You are free.. Live like christ!
